Highlights: The Tempranillo grape has been grown in Spain since Phoenicians settled there 800 BCE as part of the expansion of the Carthaginian Empire in the Mediterranean. It is an early ripening, thin-skinned black grape and is the main grape used in making Rioja. The flavour profile often has notes of plum or blackberry and it oaks well taking on notes from the wood itself.
