Highlights: Organic Lady’s Finger or Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) 羊角豆 is a member of the Malve family thought to have first been cultivated in Egypt and Ethiopia and is now grown in tropical and sub-tropical regions around the world. The Malvaceae include Hollyhock 蜀葵子 used in TCM and Hibiscus used in Middle Eastern and Ayurvedic medicine as well as cotton, cacao and durian.

Recent studies have found that the phytochemicals in okra have a therapeutic effect on a wide range of chronic diseases such as type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular, liver detox and digestive problems anti-fatigue effect. It also has antibacterial, and chemo-preventive activities.

Organic Lady’s fingers are a low-calorie, fibre rich vegetable with an interesting mucilagenous component know for soothing the intestinal tract protecting it against Helicobacter pylori infections. The fibre and mucilage carry cholesterol and toxic metabolites out of the body and may also help stabilise blood sugar and protect pancreatic β-cells from diabetes-related damage.

It is a nutritious food with useful amounts of potassium, calcium, phosphorous and magnesium, fat-soluble carotenoids, vitamin K, water-soluble vitamins B1, B2, B6, C, antioxidant polyphenols and flavonoids. It can be eaten raw, grilled, roasted, stir-fried as well as used in stews and the traditional Louisiana Gumbo.
