Highlights: Looking like a cross between leek and spring onions, organic Bunching Onions (Allium fistulosum) 长葱 Zhǎng cōng are tender and delicately flavoured. Used extensively in Chinese, Japanese and Korean cuisine, this member of the Allium family can be stir-fried, added to Nabe or pickled or thinly sliced to top Korean noodles. Its flavour is even mild enough to be added to salads.

Like other members of the allium family Bunching Onions contain flavonoid polyphenols which exhibit cytoprotective properties and seem to encourage the immune system to protect itself. The allyl‐thiosulfinates they contain also inhibit the growth of Helicobacter pylori which is considered a risk factor in gastric cancer. It is noticeable that allium vegetable consumption is associated with as decreased risk of gastric cancer.
