A member of the berry realm, cranberries are also know for their beneficial fibre and antioxidant content. They are high in vitamin C, anthocyanin, catechin, triterpenoids and quinic acid which are thought to help deter Helicobacter pylori and limit bacterial attachment to the bladder wall. Most often the sour berry is made into a juice and used as a remedy for urinary tract infections (UTI’s), to lower blood pressure, boost the immune system and protect against certain kinds of cancer.

Commercial cranberries are commonly grown using the synthetic organophosphate pesticide Diazinon. The use causes groundwater contamination as Diazinon is toxic to freshwater fish, highly toxic to bees and other beneficial insects and very highly toxic to birds. Additionally several case-control studies have suggested possible links between exposure to diazinon and childhood cancers and non- Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Farmers and farm workers.

Growing cranberries organically is a very labour intensive process as the weeds must be removed by hand rather than killed using a herbicide. Labour of course is costly and the price must be paid, however, the benefits to the environment and health are clear.
