Highlights: Domestication of grapes (Vitis vinifera) 黑葡萄 Hēi pú táo is thought to have begun in the Southern Caucasus between the Caspian and the Black seas. It then spread to the West Fertile Crescent, Jordon Valley and Egypt around 6,000 years ago. Grapes and wine have since become a staple in the Mediterranean region and form part of the heart-healthy Mediterranean diet. Now exported to the New World, they are also grown in Chile, Argentina and California.

Organic black grapes are thought to be higher in polyphenol antioxidants than red or green grapes, this includes higher levels of resveratrol and anthocyanin. These are the antioxidants that are thought in particular to benefit the cardiovascular system, protecting against cell damage and inflammation. They reduce the risk of cancer, stroke, heart attack, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and diabetes type-2. Fibre in whole organic grapes plays a key role in this respect too.

Adding organic black grapes to the diet also facilitates faster healing and they are a classic gift for hospital patients. They make a great snack for a child’s lunch box, and are delicious alone or in salads.
