Origin: Argentina
Status: Organic
Certification: NASAA
Highlights: Beautiful pear D’Anjou fresh in from Argentina!
Believed to have originated in the Loire valley, France, this pear keeps well in a cool climate and is extremely versatile. Delicious raw or cooked, it graces a cheese board, blends well in a smoothie, poaches well in wine or makes an excellent tart.
Their off-white flesh is slightly buttery, hence their alternative name Beurre d’Anjou. As they ripen they develop softness and sweetness with a hint of citrus making them extremely popular throughout Europe. Introduced into the Americas in the 19th century they are now grown in Washington State and Oregon in the US and the Rio Negro in Argentina.
The ‘Green Anjou’ pear has a pale green skin that does not change colour as the pear ripens, in order to catch them ripe, press lightly near the stem as the pear ripens from the inside out.
