Highlights: The peach (Prunus persica) 桃子 Táo zi, was first domesticated in N.W. China in the Tarim basin between the Tian Shan mountains to the north and the Kun Lun mountains to the south. In China it has come to symbolise immortality, long life, abundance and great fortune for many generations. Peaches found their way along the Silk Road through Persia to Italy where they flourished and were exported to the New World. This delicious white peach has been imported from the orchards in S. California.

Apart from their fragrant aroma and delicious taste these white peaches offer more flavonoid phenolic antioxidants than their yellow-fleshed relatives, although as would be expected, fewer carotenoids and similar amounts of vitamin C. Perhaps it was these antioxidants that began their relationship to longevity, as we now know their health-boosting flavonoids help slow down ageing. They also supply soluble and insoluble fibre, so beneficial both for the digestive and cardiovascular systems.
