Prunes or dried plums have a deserved reputation of being a very beneficial addition to a healthy diet.

With an ORAC value of 5770/100g their anti-oxidant content is higher than fresh plums. There are high levels of phenolic compounds such as hydroxycinnamic acids including neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acids. These compounds are highly effective in scavenging free radicals which would otherwise damage normal cell metabolism. Prunes are also rich in purple anthocyanins, also reknowned for their antioxidant protective abilties. Free radicals are thought to contribute to premature aging, cardiovascular disease and certain kinds of cancer.

Research on post-menopausal women suggests that prunes may play a role in reversal and prevention of osteoporosis. This is thought to be due to potassium which may help support bone health and relativelyhigh levels of the trace element boron.

Traditionally their high fibre content is known to help relieve constipation, as the fibre remains in the colon absorbing water and softens the stool making it easier to pass motion.
