Highlights: Zenxin’s Organic Black Seeds (Nigella sativa) are grown biodynamically in Egypt where there is evidence they have been valued for their beneficial properties for over 4,000 years.

Black seed are noted for their beneficial terpine antioxidants, thymoquinone, carvacrol, t-anethole and 4-terpineol. Thymoquinone especially has valuable hepatoprotective properties as well as helping reduce inflammation and cancer markers.

Nigella sativa, known in India as Kalonji, belongs to the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. Sometimes erroneously called black cumin, the seeds are shorter and more intensely black than black cumin seeds (Black jeera), which belong to the Umbelliferae or carrot family.

Used in cooking throughout the Mediterranean, Middle East and India, the seeds have interesting flavour notes of black pepper, onion and oregano and are great in home-made crackers. Commonly sprinkled on baked breads such as Turkish pide or Indian naan bread, they are also dry-roasted to add a nutty flavour to curries and beans and form part of the traditional Bengali 5-spice mixture with fenugreek, cumin, black mustard and fennel.
