Highlights: Rye flakes are processed in a similar way to rolled oats. The rye berries are steamed, rolled and dried. All whole grains are a rich source of phytochemicals, minerals, antioxidants and fibre.
In particular rye flakes are high in soluble fibre and have a lower glycemic index (GI) than many other whole grains. This benefits the digestive system as it improves flow through the digestive tract, removing toxins and reducing the risk of colon cancer.
Fibre is also beneficial to help balance blood sugar and reduce the risk of developing diabetes type-2. Being naturally high in potassium, rye flakes also help balance excess sodium, reducing blood pressure and the risk of heart attack or stroke.
Overall rye evokes a different metabolic response compared with wheat. It improves satiety, helps to reduce body weight, improves insulin sensitivity and helps lower total cholesterol.
Beneficial nutrients offered include B vitamins and vitamin E. As well as potassium, the flakes also offer iron to enrich red blood cells, magnesium to support muscle and nerve function, phosphorus to help strengthen teeth and bones, and zinc to support the immune system.
