Highlights: A favourite for Chinese New Year where it symbolises a fresh start, prosperity and good luck, leaf lettuce 叶生菜 Yè shēng cài is extremely versatile and apart from appearing in salads, sandwiches and soups, is popular as a wrap (ssambap).

As with other types of Latuca sativa it is an annual plant belonging to the Daisy family and is nutrient dense with 1 cup providing enough vitamin K for the day and 40% of the necessary beta-carotene. Being ~96% water it is also hydrating and offers the water soluble vitamin C and B complex vitamins thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), pyridoxine (B6), and folate (B9).

Minerals available in the leaves include heart-healthy potassium as well as iron, manganese and magnesium, so as well symbolising a prosperous start to the year it offers essential benefits to your health.
