Highlights: Navel oranges (citrus sinensis) 脐橙 Qí chéng, originated as a ‘sport’ or spontaneous mutation in a Brazilian plantation ~200 years ago and technically every navel orange is a clone from the original tree. Cuttings were grafted on trees in California, Arizona and Florida in the USA and from there sent to Spain, Australia and South Africa.

Its named for the second tiny orange fruit which grows at the blossom end which looks like a human navel. It’s sweetness, delicious flavour and refreshing juice account for its now global popularity.

Apart from being packed with vitamin C, eating whole oranges means you treat the body to beneficial fibre both soluble and insoluble. This assists in reducing cholesterol and keeping the cardiovascular system healthy.
