Highlights: Purple radishes (Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus) 紫 萝卜 Zǐ luó bo are a variant of the white radish so prized in Asian cuisine. The purple colouring is from anthocyanins, the same antioxidant famous in blueberries giving them superfood status.

This radish has all the benefits of the white radish, vitamins A, C, E & B6, minerals potassium, calcium, iron & magnesium plus the extra anthocyanins. It is low in calories but nutrient dense, is a known diuretic so beneficial for kidney health and its fibre helps detox the large intestine. Like the white radish it is a member of the cabbage family and contains isothiocyanates thought to help protect the body against cancer.

Great to eat raw, as in grated daikon accompanying oily foods like mackerel, superb in soups and braised dishes and delicious picked or roasted!
