Highlights: Hericium erinaceus (Yamabushitake or monkey-head mushroom ) 猴头菇 Hóu tóu gū is used as a functional food and as traditional medicine in China, India, Korea and Japan. Phytochemicals in the mushroom have noticeable immune boosting and anti-inflammatory effects which lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, digestive ulcers and diabetes.

It is thought to be useful in helping to prevent cognitive decline, to protect against dementia, reduce mild symptoms of anxiety and depression and speed up recovery time for injuries to the nervous system in general.

Like other mushrooms it contains beneficial polysaccharides and beta-glucan, but is also contains substances called hericenones and erinacines. In particular there is a substance  called hericenone B, which research suggests can decrease the rate of blood clotting and lower the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Compounds in Hericium work to inhibit the growth of H. pylori and act to protect the stomach lining, effecting further beneficial changes in gut bacteria which also act to boost the immune system.

Sourced directly from Zhejiang it has an aromatic fragrance and soft texture. Grown under organic agricultural methods without the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Free from added artificial flavourings, preservatives and sulphur.
